Though Ravic has given up on the possibility of love, life has a curious way of taking a turn for the romantic, even during the worst of times, as he cautiously befriends an actress.
Before escaping the Nazis, Ravic, whose real name is Ludwig Fresenburg, had the arch of triumph remarque head surgeon in a German hospital. Meanwhile inhe was living relatively comfortably in a refugee hotel whose inhabitants represented a cross section of Russian, German-Jewish, and Spanish exiles.
Ravic is an accomplished German surgeon, and having fled Nazi Germany, he is living in Paris without passport or documantation.
He finds work by performing the arch of triumph remarque for two, less than average, French doctors. If the drinking had resulted in something and for that reason had made the alcohol a catalyst for that event then yes, perhaps, but this was never the case.
It was however difficult to believe that Remarque could write something quite so syrupy and at the same time senseless. I give this book two out of five wine bottles. There was a problem adding your email address.
